Moving from Singapore to Johor Bahru (JB): What MM2H Applicants Should Know Before Making the Move

For many people in Singapore, Johor Bahru used to mean weekend shopping, good food, petrol runs, massages, grocery trips, and maybe a short staycation. But these days, JB is starting to shine as more than just a weekend destination. More families, retirees and working professionals are starting to see Johor Bahru as a real second-home option, close enough to Singapore, but generally a more relaxed pace of life. With stronger Singapore-Johor connectivity in the pipeline, many people are now asking a very practical question: “Can I apply for MM2H and live in JB long-term, while still staying connected to Singapore?” For some, the Malaysia My Second Home programme, commonly known as MM2H, may be one possible route. But every family has a different story, so before making the move, let’s look at some practical questions that often come up.

1. Is MM2H a visa, PR, or citizenship pathway?

One of the most common misunderstandings is that MM2H is the same as Malaysian permanent residence, or that it will eventually lead to Malaysian citizenship. It does not. MM2H is generally a renewable long-term social visit pass which allows eligible foreigners to stay in Malaysia on a long-term basis. In simple terms, it gives you the flexibility to enjoy Malaysia as a long-term home base, but it should not be treated as PR or a citizenship route. For many Singapore-based applicants, the attraction is simple: MM2H allows them to build a more comfortable base in Malaysia, without being too far from Singapore. It gives them room to enjoy a different pace of life in JB, while still keeping Singapore within easy reach.

2. How does the 90-day stay requirement work?

For Singapore-based applicants, this is a very real question: “If I live in JB but still go in and out of Singapore, how will my stay be counted?” Based on the current MM2H guidelines, MM2H participants aged below 50 years old are required to be present or stay in Malaysia for 90 days cumulatively in one year and the days can be shared with your dependents together. The good news is that “cumulative” means it does not need to be 90 days in one shot. You do not need to lock yourself in Malaysia for 3 months straight. The days can be added up throughout the year. For example, if you live in JB during the weekdays, travel to Singapore for meetings, or go back and forth for family, business or work arrangements, what matters is the actual time you spend in Malaysia. Many people are not planning to “disappear” from Singapore completely. They may still have work, children, relatives, business, doctors, friends or routines in Singapore.

3. Moving your pet from Singapore to Malaysia

For many pet lovers, the move is not really complete unless their fur-kids can come along too. Because let’s be honest, they are not just pets; they are part of the family. So naturally, one of the first questions is: “Can my dog or cat move with us to Malaysia?” The good news is that pets can be part of the move, but it is not as simple as putting your dog in the car and driving across the Causeway. For dogs and cats from Singapore, Malaysia’s DVS pet import portal states that your pet must be examined by the Veterinary Department Singapore within 7 days before import and found free from clinical signs of infectious or contagious disease. The pet must also travel directly by aircraft or road transport to the prescribed landing place or airport as directed by Malaysia’s veterinary authorities. This means your pet may need the right health checks, import permit, vaccination records and travel arrangements before entering Malaysia. Malaysia’s official DVS import regulations also state that dogs and cats from Singapore must be accompanied by a valid import permit issued by MAQIS. Once that is sorted, your JB life can properly begin, morning walks, bigger living space, weekend cafes, and maybe a very happy dog enjoying a little more room to run around.

Finding Home Again in Johor Bahru (JB)

For some people, JB offers more space. For others, it is about retirement, children’s education, lifestyle, or simply having a place where life feels a little less rushed. For some, it may also be about reconnecting with their roots. Sometimes, people may have moved overseas many years ago for business, career opportunities or family reasons, but deep down, Malaysia still feels familiar to them. It could be the culture, the neighbourhood, the food, or even the kopitiam where they used to sit with family and friends. These things may seem small, but they can make a big difference in daily life. We once received an enquiry where the son was an ex-Malaysian, and he was planning to bring his mother back to Malaysia. Most of her relatives were still here, including her brothers, sisters and old friends. Instead of retiring in a place where she may feel lonely or disconnected, MM2H gave her the chance to be back in Malaysia and reconnect with the people she loves, in a place that still feels familiar. That sense of comfort and belonging matters a lot. Sometimes, retirement is not just about finding the cheapest place to live. It is about finding a place where you feel at home. The best move is not just the one that looks good on paper. It is the one that fits your real life- your family, your work, your routines, your memories, and the kind of home you want to build. For many Singapore-based families, Johor Bahru may not just be a place to visit anymore. It may be the start of a new chapter- not too rushed, not too commercial, but simple, familiar and relaxing.
